History

Its a challenging job to try to put together the history of Relating Arts so what you see on this page is likely not the full story. It is however our best attempt at giving an overview of the various lineages that have intermingled and created the ecology of practice that we see today.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes personal responsibility and focuses on the individual’s experience in the present moment, the therapist–client relationship, the environmental and social contexts of a person’s life, and the self-regulating adjustments people make as a result of their overall situation. It was developed by Fritz Perls, Laura Perls and Paul Goodman in the 1940s and 1950s, and was first described in the 1951 book Gestalt Therapy.

Focusing

Eugene Gendlin

The term “Focusing” came out of research Eugene Gendlin began in 1953 at the University of Chicago. He did 15 yrs of research analyzing what made psychotherapy either successful or unsuccessful. His conclusion was that it was not something the therapist did, rather something the clients did inside themselves during the session. He began to study the behavior and how to teach it. He wrote a little book called “Focusing” that you may have run into. It’s a wonderful book, a great place to start and what is known about Focusing has come a long way since then.

Nonviolent Communication

Marchall Rosenberg - Non Violent Communication

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a communication process developed by clinical psychologist Marshall Rosenberg in the 1960s and 1970s based on the principles of nonviolence and humanistic psychology. It aims to increase empathic understanding and reduce conflict in everyday interactions. It foregrounds four components—observation (distinguishing concrete observation from evaluation), feelings, fundamental needs[1], and requests—and encourages expressing observations and needs without judgment in order to foster voluntary cooperation.

Compiling this timeline has already been a bit of an effort. Many dates (and stories) are contested and a lot of the material is based on stories from practitioners or reading up on various websites. We have listed some of the main sources here:
