Practices for being more open — and more grounded. More honest — and more kind. More genuinely in contact with the people around you.

Welcome to Relating Arts!

Relating Arts is an ecology of practices dedicated to the quality of human connection — how present you are, how honest, how genuinely in contact with another person. It includes everything from simple games you can play with a friend tonight, to the potential of decades of study in one of the many schools of practice.

This site exists to make that field navigable. To show its width — the many practices, approaches and people working in this space — and its depth — the masters who have spent years refining their craft, and the schools you can turn to when your home practice starts raising real questions.

Not sure where to begin? Download 100 question cards for deeper conversations — something you can pull out with a friend, a partner, or at a dinner table tonight. No experience needed.

A note on how to use the page — and a warning.

I came to this field through Tai Chi, and that’s still how I think about learning anything worth learning: you find a basic form, you practice it until you think you understand it, you return to a teacher and discover you’ve only just begun. Then you repeat. There are no shortcuts here.

Nothing on this site will promise to heal your trauma in a weekend or transform your relationships overnight. What it will offer is honest, practice-based descriptions written by people who have actually done the work — alongside the quiet truth that the people who practice these things have also experienced something real: more intimacy, more aliveness, a genuine sense of being touched by another person.

That possibility is worth the work. But it is work.

I hope to see you out there.

Attunement: How do you make beautiful music?

We can clue in to what Attunement is by looking at the word’s roots. In English, the earliest uses of the word meant “to tune an instrument.’ You can get a sense of this in paying attention —really paying attention — to something: sitting actively, and waiting, you come into a kind of resonance with what you’re paying attention to.

Developing Emotional Maturity & Liberating Lifeforce

The core teaching of the workshop is that we can learn to relate to our feelings and emotions in ways that will lead to less suffering for ourselves and others. In some way it is simple. Relate with the emotion fully – really feel it. Then disidentify from it and let it go. Emotional maturity is just this – allowing ...
